Organization overview

Collective Media is a nonprofit crowdfunding platform that pays creators a fair, one-time fee for a specific work — and releases that finished work into the public domain, free for everyone, forever. Donors fund a personal wallet and direct contributions to projects they believe in: a novel, an album, a film, a work of scholarship.

When a project reaches its funding goal, the creator is paid in full and the completed work is dedicated to the public domain under CC0. If a project does not reach its goal by its deadline, every contribution returns automatically to the donor's wallet. Creators pay no platform fee; a 5% fee on wallet contributions covers operating costs.

The model departs from existing platforms in three ways: creators keep creative control and credit and pay nothing, donor contributions support a nonprofit, and the resulting work belongs to the public rather than to a platform or a label.

Founding story

Most of the culture we love was made by people who were never paid fairly for it. Collective Media exists to change one link in that chain: pay the artist in full, once, for the work — then give the work to everyone. No royalties to chase, no rights signed away to a gatekeeper, no paywall on the result. It is public-domain commissioning infrastructure for the things that markets won't fund but culture needs.
